Description:

JFK Assassination Dallas Invite to Trade Mart--Very Rare

An invitation to the November 22, 1963 luncheon at the Dallas Trade Mart “in honor of The President and Mrs. Kennedy, The Vice President and Mrs. Johnson, and The Governor and Mrs. Connally”, an event which never took place. The bifold cream invitation is embossed with printed calligraphy, and the space for the invitee has been left blank. Serial number 2012 is printed verso. The inner pages are blank. Expected wear including paper folds and isolated stains and scuffs, else very good to near fine. 6.875" x 9.75".

35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) was en route to the Trade Mart (now called the Dallas Market Center) to attend this luncheon when he was shot near Dealey Plaza. The 10-mile route through downtown Dallas from Love Field in a motorcade had been intended as a public relations opportunity. It was interrupted about three miles south of its intended destination--the Trade Mart--when the presidential motorcade raced instead to Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Approximately 2,500 guests including Senator from Texas Ralph Yarborough and Dallas Mayor Earle Cabell had already assembled in the Grand Courtyard of the Trade Mart to await the presidential party. (The Trade Mart, a large indoor marketplace opened in the late 1950s, is still a Texas shopping destination.) The luncheon was co-hosted by the Dallas Citizens Council, a civic body formed in 1937 to promote urban initiatives. Over an hour after the luncheon was slated to begin, around 1:15 pm, event organizers announced that President Kennedy and Governor Connally had been shot. The space had already been arranged with tables, chairs, and luncheon settings. Kennedy's empty seat at this cancelled banquet is shown below.

The 2,500-word speech that President Kennedy was scheduled to give is referred to among Dallas residents as the "Unspoken Speech", and it is regarded with awe. In the speech, Kennedy condemned recent displays of threatening rhetoric and even violence that Dallas citizens had recently shown Democrats.

An eerie relic of Kennedyiana from a luncheon the assassinated president never attended.
