Jawaharlal Nehru Signed Vintage Bombay Photo Postcard

A vintage photo postcard of Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964), the 1st Prime Minister of the Dominion of India and later the Republic of India, signed and dated by him in English as "Jawaharlal Nehru / 1949" near the bottom edge of the photo field. N.p. The glossy black and white photograph shows the seated Nehru wearing a white Gandhi topi, a type of white peaked cap associated with Mohandas Gandhi and the Indian independence movement. The postcard is printed "Photo Central Bombay" along the bottom margin recto, and is also hand-stamped in part verso as "Copyright / Photo Central / 195 Hornby Road, Bombay." The postcard is blank. Expected wear including minor to moderate wrinkles mostly confined to the right edge recto. A former collector's pencil inscription can be found verso. Else near fine. 3.5" x 5.5."

1949 was an important year in the history of India. The nation had been granted its independence from the British Raj on August 15, 1947, and although that was certainly a powerful symbolic change, it only marked the beginning of the transition into complete self-government. The process of designing India's new government would take more than 28 months. On November 26, 1949, the Indian Constituent Assembly (the precursor of the Indian Parliament) adopted a constitution that later led to the establishment of the Republic of India on January 26, 1950, also known as Republic Day.

Jawaharlal Nehru, a British-educated lawyer and Indian nationalist, was the political heir of Mohandas Gandhi. Nehru eventually served as the 1st Prime Minister of the Dominion of India from 1947-1950, and later as the 1st Prime Minister of the Republic of India from 1950-1964.
