Description:

Jacqueline Kennedy "Negro workers in the South" 1968 TLS Re: Robert McNamara African Americans

TLS, 1p on Kennedy coat of arms letterhead, measuring 6.25" x 9.25", dated July 25, 1968. A letter from the former first lady to artist and needlepoint designer Leslie Tillett, regarding a message relayed to Robert McNamara as well as a new philanthropy project in the works to raise money for poor African Americans. Boldly signed "Jacqueline Kennedy" at the conclusion, adding the salutation ("Dear Mr Tillett) in her own hand in blue ballpoint pen. Fine condition with some minor creasing and expected letter folds present- interesting contents with connections to RFK.

Reading in full:

"I finally had the occasion to give your papers to Mr. McNamara. He was most interested but I would not expect an immediate follow-through as I know all the World Bank problems in these places are so huge. They don't seem to have gotten down to details yet, but I know he will and that some good will come of it eventually.
Some people who used to be with Senator Robert Kennedy were talking about helping the poor Negro workers in the South- using their skills (for making quilts, etc.) so that they could market their wares and make some money.
Perhaps some time this fall we could talk about this, with you, as I am certain you would be a greater help than anyone."

McNamara (1916-2009), who previously served as U.S. Secretary of Defense under presidents Kennedy and Johnson, accepted the position of President at the World Bank in April 1968. A close friend of Robert Kennedy, he would film himself giving a statement in support of RFK's entering the Democratic primaries that same year. This letter, written a little over a month after the senator's assassination, shows his legacy of establishing Civil Rights initiatives through his former associates, although it is unclear whether the aforementioned project received any traction.
