Description:

Valentine Collage, 3p, 9” x 12”, on two sheets of red construction paper, tied together at the left. February 1962. On Feb. 9, 1962, President and Mrs. Kennedy gave a private dinner-dance party for Stephen and Jean Kennedy Smith who were moving from Washington to New York. Lester Lanin and his orchestra played until 4:30 A.M. The borders of paper doilies had been affixed to the perimeters of pages 1 & 3. Partial articles by Drew Pearson and Betty Beale are on the cover. Page 2 pictures two dancers with the heads of JFK & Robert McNamara affixed. Page 3 depicts two dancers with the heads of McNamara & Jacqueline Kennedy affixed. Headlines from Feb. 17th &18th, 1962 “Washington Post” articles were affixed to pages 1-3. Photocopies of the actual headlines with articles are present.

Examples: the word “Nuremberg” was cut off from a Feb. 18th article and replaced with the orchestra leader in the cover page headline: “Tragic Lesson of History / Pinpointed by Lester Lanin.” Over a depiction of McNamara and Jackie dancing on p. 3, the name “Beethoven” was cut off and replaced to make the headline read: “McNamara’s Great Variations / Uncover Startling New Talent.”

This Valentine Collage, undoubtedly by Jacqueline Kennedy, was with a collection of Jacqueline Kennedy letters to Robert McNamara.

(2) Envelope, 6.5” x 5”, printed free frank in upper right “Jacqueline Kennedy,” addressed by her to “The Secretary of Defense” (Robert McNamara), noted by Mrs. Kennedy “By Hand” in lower left. Light stain in lower center. Back flap, small tear when it was opened, engraved “Mrs. John F. Kennedy.”
