Jackie thanked friend and colleague Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. (1917-2007) for having recently sent her a presentation copy of his biography of John F. Kennedy, "A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House" (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1965).

Jackie wrote in full:

"Jan 3

Dearest Arthur -

Thank you for the most beautifully bound copy of A Thousand Days, and for what you wrote inside it to me, but most of all for what you wrote in it about Jack -

You know that it will always be the most treasured book I will ever have -

With all love

Jackie".

Jackie's correspondent Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. had been uniquely situated to write a compelling account of Kennedy's presidency. Schlesinger, who wrote extensively about twentieth-century Democratic political figures, resigned his full professorship at Harvard University in 1961 to become Kennedy's "court historian", speechwriter, and general go-to special assistant. In this capacity, Schlesinger observed firsthand the major events of Kennedy's administration. He was also a personal friend of the Kennedys, so his objectivity as a historian was tempered by sympathetic personal recollections. Schlesinger's book won the Pulitzer Prize in Biography, and the National Book Award in History and Biography, in 1966. This letter shows that Jackie admired Schlesinger's effort as much as the critics.
