Description:

Jack Ruby's Hair, Shivs, Razor, and Scissors, All Collected from Prison

An incredible group of items relating to Jack Ruby and his time in prison after his murder of Lee Harvey Oswald. The items were collected by the Dallas County Jail barber, Eddie Hayner Harney, who had numerous encounters with Ruby during his imprisonment from 1963 to 1967. The small archive consisting of the following:

Jack Ruby's hair clippings: Collection of hair measures 2" x 1.5", hundreds of short brown hair strands. Framed in a mother of pearl frame with the below.

Framed 5 cent tickets, Buffalo Nickel & Business Card: Four green Nevins & Nevins tickets, one of which is signed by Jack Ruby to the barber "To a nice guy. Always Jack Ruby"; An Indian head buffalo nickel, which Ruby used to tip the barber for a haircut; Business card stating the barber's information and signed "Made up by Jail-Barber/Eddie H. Harney."

Scissors used to cut Jack Ruby's hair: Silver pair of scissors, measuring 7" x 2", made in Germany by F.A. Koch.

Razor used to shave Jack Ruby: A switchblade razor, measuring 5" x 0.75". With a brown tortoiseshell handle, on which has been crudely carved "JR".

Jack Ruby's personal prison shivs: Two dangerous-looking carved shivs, the first made of wood and silver, measuring 3.5" x 0.375". The pointed end is very sharp, and the wooden handle has a silver décor that reads "Guaranteed Ezra F. Bowman & Co., Lancaster PA, Pat. Mar. 12, 1889." The second is carved from cream plastic, measuring 6" x 0.5". A small maker's mark on the plastic reads "Alex 410". Both shivs are said to be from Ruby's jail cell, but it cannot be positively identified what items were used to make them. It is possible the wooden and metal shiv was carved from an antique engraving tool.

The group has an additional set of black-handled scissors, which appear to be a bit more contemporary. Also included is a "DALLAS SHERIFF" patch, measuring 6" x 4.75". The white lettering appears on a black background. The framed hair, tickets, and nickel are all in fine condition, with minimal wear, toning, or soiling. Ruby's razor and scissors have varying degrees of wear and rust. The shivs are in very fine condition as well. The group is accompanied by a letter of provenance, dated February 4, 2021. From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

Jack Ruby (1911-1967) was a Dallas nightclub owner but is best known as the murderer of John F. Kennedy's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. Ruby shot Oswald on November 24, 1963, as Oswald was being transferred to the county jail. Many people still to this day believe that Ruby could have killed Oswald in an attempt to cover up a larger plot to assassinate Kennedy. Unfortunately for historians and conspiracy theorists alike, Ruby died in prison on January 3, 1967, without providing any further clarifications to the tragic incident.
