Description:

Jack Ruby Signed Recording Contract, Possible Russia Connection?

Three page typed document signed, 8.5" x 14". A recording contract between Jack Ruby, artist "Joe Johnson" and Al Kavelin of "Cascade Records". Dated "May 19, 1959". Three typed pages with the signatures on the last page "Approved agent by Jack Ruby", "Joe Johnson", artist, and "Al Kavelin", Cascade records.  Near fine with light toning and creasing. From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

A contract stipulating that a minimum of six selections shall be recorded during each recording year "… with the company paying the artist's royalites at the specified rate … such royalites shall be 5% for each record sold… company agrees to make an advance against royalites at the rate of union scale for reach master Company accepts".

Al Kavelin led a popular dance band in the 1930's and released music on Cascade records. Joe Johnson was a tenor sax player. Johnson was an instrumentalist, coming on the scene to record with Joe Turner, Nat King Cole and Ray Charles. Johnson ended up recording at "Club Vegas", a Dallas nightclub run by Jack Ruby (to which this contract references). Johnson was signed to Cascade and released "The Gila Monster" which he recorded for a SciFi thriller movie shortly after signing this contract.

This detailed contract addresses failed appearances, recording exclusively for the Company, unavailability, delays all by the artist, and the rights of the Company to publish, authorize sales, assignments and negotiations.

**Oddly enough, Al Kavelin was born in Minsk Russia ... somewhat of an uncanny coincidence.
