Description:

Jack Ruby Signed Contract for Entertainment at the Sovereign Club

1p partially printed document, measuring 8.5" x 12.5", Dallas, Texas, dated August 23, 1960. An American Guild of Variety Artists Standard Form of Artists Engagement Contract, No. 161870. The agreement between Breck Wall-Jack Ruby and Gerry Johnson hires the artist for an engagement at the Sovereign Club for a period of six weeks, with performances 6 days a week, and 7 daily shows, starting September 14, 1960. Johnson agreed to a payment of $80 per week. Signed at the bottom of the contract, "Jack Ruby" as Vice President of the club. Additionally signed by Gerry Johnson. On verso, Ruby has written a note, marking the end of the contract, reading: "Termination of this contract as of today 10-14-60." With a flattened fold and creased corners. Tearing and minor paper loss at the bottom edge with a small tear through the bottom of the "J" of Jack Ruby's signature. Tape on verso has repaired some of the tears. From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

In late 1959, Jack Ruby partnered with Joe Slatin to establishing the Sovereign Club, a private club. Ruby invested about $6,000 in the club, which was described as a "plush" and exclusive club, and Ruby was anxious to attract a wealthy clientele. The partners, however, fell out and Slatin ended up leaving the business in early 1960. Ruby then partnered with Ralph Paul, and eventually changed the Sovereign's name to the Carousel Club. The venue became one of three downtown Dallas burlesque clubs and served champagne, beer, "setups" and pizza.
