Description:

Kerouac Jack

Jack Kerouac's Superb Framed Photo of His Brother Gerard, Estate Provenance

Outstanding miniature frame with a black and white photo of Jack Kerouac's brother, Gerard, 1.5" x 1.25". The frame appears to be made of brass, and is adorned with six blue glass beads. The photo is a black and white faded image of Gerard. This close up picture of Gerard's head is seen in numerous other images of Gerard online and is perhaps the most famous of the images of Kerouac's brother. This piece came directly from Kerouac's estate and is small enough to fit into one's pocket. Gerard's importance in Kerouac's life cannot be overstated, and perhaps this frame was carried around by Kerouac.

Provenance: The piece will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executor of the Kerouac Estate. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.

Kerouac was four at the time of his nine-year-old brother's death from Rheumatic Fever. This deeply affected Jack, who would later say that Gerard followed him in life as a guardian angel. According to Kerouac, "The whole reason why I ever wrote at all ... was because of Gerard." Kerouac wrote a lyrical tribute to his brother entitled "Visions of Gerard", a holy book in the Kerouac canon. Gerard has appeared in several other Kerouac works.
