Jack Kerouac's Receipt for Memere's Wheelchair, Estate-Certified

A carbon copy of a packing slip bearing the authentic signature of Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous American writer who brought us "On The Road" (1957). Kerouac signed the original medical equipment packing slip on November 22, 1968, and left a strong impression of his carbon copy signature as "John L. Kerouac" at bottom. Stamped verso with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp. Expected wear including paper folds, chipped edges, and a few closed tears. Else very good. 8.5" 11.5".

Invoice 879 confirmed that Kerouac had paid $13.00 cash on delivery for a "Reg. Wheelchair (Rental)" from Tampa and St. Petersburg-based "Anderson Surgical Supply Company / Hospital, Laboratory and Physicians' Supplies and Equipment". The wheelchair was for Jack's mother, Gabrielle-Ange Lévesque Kerouac (1895-1973), called Memere. Gabrielle was left partly paralyzed following a stroke in 1966. The clerk has misspelled Gabrielle's name as "Mrs. Gabrielle A. Kerovac" near the top. Delivery likely occurred the same day, judging from the typed clerical note "Today Sure" at center. (Were these Jack's words verbatim?)

Jack, his third wife Stella, and Jack's mother had moved to 5169 10th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, Florida during the summer of 1968. This address is listed as the wheelchair delivery address at upper left; their phone number of "343-1541" can be found at upper right. The images attached to this lot show Gabrielle seated in a wheelchair, possibly one rented from this same company. Stella was Gabrielle's primary caregiver before and after Jack's death in October 1969.
