This book was Hefner's anthology of the best writing "Playboy" had published over the twelve years since its inception. Hefner writes in his Preface of the book: "The most talented of contemporary writers are attracted to our pages because we offer them an unmatched opportunity to say their say - in essays of opinion, in interviews, in fiction, in humor and in satire, and in factual articles - to a congenial company of their fellow men. This creative freedom accounts in large measure for the roster of literary greats that appears in the present volume…we have selected here, in permanent form, what we deem to be the cream of our published past… thus to share for years to come, with readers and writers, this literally celebration of our first twelve years …"
