Description:

Kerouac Jack

Jack Kerouac's Autographed & Signed ID, with Folio and Cards From His Estate!

Scarce! Kerouac's handmade, autographed and signed ID, 2.75" x 3". Black and White photo of Kerouac taped to the front of card stock, and signed below the photograph by Jack Kerouac in full signature "Jack Kerouac". The verso of the card is written in the hand of Kerouac as:

"Phone 343-1541

Social Security No:

022-14-5342

Born: 3-12-22

5169 10th Ave. No

St. Petersburg, Fla

33710"

Above his handwriting is a taped small sheet of:

MW 486-17 REN

J304-241

John Louis Kerouac

Accompanied by his black folio, 6.25" x 4.5" (dimensions when open), and  1) His and Stella's Citizens National Bank card including the bank and account number, 2) A letter from the bank welcoming the Kerouacs to the bank and opening the account, and 3) Jack Kerouac's Public Library ID card for the St. Petersburg Public Library with his last address of 5169 Tenth Ave., No. 33710. The date of expiration is listed as Dec. 4, 1971 with the date of issue is unknown. However this was obviously the last Library card he obtained.

Provenance: The piece will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Sean-Sampas, executor of the Kerouac Estate. John Sean-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife

The tape is brittle, and discolored, with part of it no longer adhering. Jack Kerouac's signature runs along covering both the tape and the lower portion of the card. The handwriting on the verso, aside from his phone number, is written directly on the card. This Kerouac homemade ID card was located within a small black folio which also contained the two pieces of identification.

An important set, with a revealing unsophisticated, humble, basic handcrafted ID card. It would be unclear why Kerouac needed to place his phone number on the card, or even much of the balance of the information including his date of birth. One can only use conjecture, perhaps he was already not feeling well, or perhaps he was still carousing the bar circuit, and was concerned about being found unconscious. An intriguing and very personal piece.
