Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) headlined the September 19-20, 1969 show staged at The Fillmore East, Bill Graham's rock venue on Second Avenue near East 6th Street in the East Village. The band performed two shows nightly on September 19th and September 20th; the setlist featured a mix of covers from their first album, "Crosby, Stills & Nash," released in May 1969, as well as covers from Buffalo Springfield, The Beatles, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young. One of the songs that CSNY performed was "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," which would reach the Top 40 list by December 1969. The companion musical act at the Fillmore East on September 19th and 20th was Indiana folk singer-songwriter Lonnie Mack; Joshua Light Show provided house "visual accompaniment" in the form of far-out lighting and visual effects.

The Fillmore East had been an abandoned neighborhood Yiddish theatre and movie theatre when concert rock promoter Bill Graham (1931-1991) converted it into one of the most dynamic rock concert venues in the United States. Graham established the Fillmore East in March 1968 as the East Coast counterpart of his San Francisco Fillmore West. The Fillmore East remained open for only three years and three months before shuttering in June 1971. Still, even during that short time frame, Fillmore East hosted major rock and folk acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, The Who, Van Morrison, and Ike and Tina Turner.

CSNY didn't last as long as the short-lived Fillmore East. Crosby, Stills & Nash had been formed in 1968. Their first album release coincided with taking on fourth band mate Neil Young, and the subsequent name change. CSNY played selections from their first album at Woodstock Music Festival on August 18, 1969. A month later, they were live at the Fillmore East with four performances. The band returned to the Fillmore East in June 1970 and disbanded shortly thereafter.
