Description:

Incredible Kamehameha IV ALS "Behold, the chiefs of Pahihi..."

2pp of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 12.5", Honolulu, Hawaii, dated October 11, 1857. Boldly signed at the conclusion "Kamehameha". Addressed to the Honorable P. Kanaa, regarding a report sent with incorrect calculations. Kamehameha requests that a new report be drafted and sent to him. The letter is written in Hawaiian, and a rough translation of it is as follows:

"I received your report for the past quarter, sending $ 43.43 and the drafts; and Opupahi $62.50, and Kauai drafts $42.50. The draft is wrong, because his commission was issued on the 6th of August, 1859, and therefore he did not receive the same amount of money on the first day of the election. The actual fee is $37.50. You will rewrite your new report, and you are hereby authorized to sign your name and send me the sum of five dollars, together with the report you have prepared. Behold, the chiefs of Pahihi and his companions have sent for the men and they have seen them and given horses to the people whom they wished."

The letter has flattened mail folds, with small holes at the spine of the bifolium. Uneven toning, foxing, and soiling throughout. Boldly signed.

Kamehameha IV (1834-1863) was the fourth monarch of Hawaii, reigning the Kingdom of Hawaii from January 11, 1855, to November 30, 1863. He married Emma Rooke a year after ascending to the throne, and the couple had one child, Prince Albert Edward Kauikeaouli Kaleiopapa a Kamehameha. Queen Victoria herself became the prince's godmother, although tragically he died at the age of four. When the Civil War broke out, Kamehameha IV declared Hawaii to be neutral in the conflict and continued his efforts to resist American influence on the islands. His reign was sadly short-lived, as he died of chronic asthma on November 30, 1863, and was succeeded by his brother.
