Description:

Henry Clay ALS "It is too early to judge...the disposition of the new administration"

1p of a bifolium, measuring 8.75" x 11", Ashland, dated April 7, 1849. Signed "H. Clay" and addressed to Nicholas Dean Esq. Clay provides a recommendation for Dean's application to be a Marshall and speaks of Taylor's appointments as President. It reads in full:

"I received your favor of the 12th Ulto. since my return home a few days ago, stating that your name might probably be presented for the office of Marshall in the S. District of N. York. I have adopted as a general rule that of not interposing in local appointment in States other than that of my residence; but the great esteem I entertain for you, and the high appreciation in which I hold your merits and talents have induced me to make an exception of your case. I accordingly transmit the enclosed letter, and I shall be glad if it should contribute to the accomplishment of the object in view. It is too early to judge definitively of the disposition of the new administration is regard to public appointments but I own that so far I think it indicates a purpose to confine them pretty much to the original friends of Genl Taylor. He will be very unwise, as well as unjust of the friends of other persons, who were spoken of as Candidates for the Presidency, are systematically excluded from office." Flattened mail folds and addition creasing, partially affecting the text. A few small holes present at the folds, with larger holes to the address page. Boldly signed.

Clay had refused to campaign on behalf of Zachary Taylor, a fact which soured the already tenuous relationship between the two men. Clay himself had already been a candidate for president four times, and, as this letter demonstrates, was clearly put out that he was not offered a high ranking position within the administration.
