Description:

Henry Clay ALS "I find myself now, towards the close of life..."

1p of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 10", Ashland, dated September 24, 1849. Boldly signed "H. Clay" and addressed to Nicholas Dean Esq. Clay writes to his friend about his health and his fears of not seeing his son again. It reads in full:

"I returned home a few days ago in improved health and found my family in the enjoyment of that great blessing. I received your friendly letter communicating the departure of my son and his family and incidents attending it, for which I feel greatly obliged. If they had, as I hope, a prosperous voyage, they will have arrived at Liverpool about the same day that I reached home. My separation from them, probably for a length of time, the uncertainty of life rendering it not unlikely that I may never see them again, and the deep and affectionate interest I take in their welfare and happiness, has been extremely fearful. I find myself now, towards the close of life, in one respect, in a condition similar to that with which I began it. Mrs. Clay and I commenced it alone; and after having had eleven children, of whom only four remain, our youngest son is the sole white person residing with us. I know not, my dear Sir, how to express to you my grateful sense of the many proofs you have given of affectionate kindness to myself and to my son. They will always be remembered with thanks and gratitude. Should circumstances ever bring you this way, we would be happy to receive you, under our roof, with hearty welcome and cordial hospitality." The letter has flattened mail folds and faint edge toning. A few contemporary spots where the ink was smudged. Boldly signed.

Henry Clay died three years later on June 29, 1852 at the National Hotel in Washington, DC. It is possible that Clay's son mentioned in the letter was James B. Clay, who at the time was serving as the Clay Chargé d'Affaires to Portugal. He was appointed to the position on August 1, 1849, and served until July 19, 1850.
