Description:

Henrietta Szold TLS Forwarding a Voucher Appropriating $500 for a New English Translation of the Bible

Typed Letter Signed “Henrietta Szold,” 1.5 pages, 6” x 9.5”, separate sheets. New York, November 4, 1906. To Hon. Mayer Sulzberger, Philadelphia, beginning “Dear Judge Sulzberger.” Letterhead of “The Jewish Publication Society of America / 608 Chestnut Street / Philadelphia” with “#528 West 123rd St., / New York” typed in. Fine condition.

In full, “The enclosed is a voucher made out by Dr. [Solomon] Schechter as Chairman of the Board of Editors of the Bible Translation, under the Resolution adopted by the Board of Trustees appropriating five hundred dollars ($500.00) for the Bible work, subject to the order of the Chairman of the Board, and the Chairman of the Publication Committee. Accordingly, the voucher will have to be countersigned by you before it can be honored by the Board. If you will kindly return it to me with your signature, I shall forward it at once to the secretary. Dr. Schechter desired me to find out from you whether the fifty dollars ($50.00) due Dr. Max L. Margolis for travelling expenses incurred in consulting with Dr. Schechter regarding the Bible Commentary work, is to come out of the same fund. My own impression is that the appropriation was meant to cover only the Bible translation work, and not to include the Commentary work. Dr. Schechter told me that you desire the next meeting of the Publication Committee to be held on November 18.”

Mayer Sulzberger (1843-1923) was Chairman of the Publication Committee of the Jewish Publication Society of America. He was a Judge of Common Pleas Court from 1895-1902 when he was elevated to President Judge of Common Pleas Court, serving until 1915 when, at age 72, he retired voluntarily. Judge Sulzberger’s obituary in “The New York Times” noted that he “had a national reputation as a Jewish scholar and was the possessor of one of the finest private libraries in America.”

Solomon Schechter (1847-1915), Chairman of the Board of Editors of the Bible Translation of the JPS, became president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1902. In 1913, two years before he died, he established and served as first president of the United Synagogue of America, an organization of Conservative Jewish congregations.

Max L. Margolis (1877-1932) became Editor-in-Chief of the Jewish Publication Society’s project of translating the Bible into English. The plans for its publication was announced by the JPS in 1908 noting that “this version of the Bible in English, issued under Jewish auspices, will be free from all non-Jewish interpretations. When completed, the Bible will be made accessible to all English-speaking Jews ... “The Holy Scriptures According to the Masoretic Text: A New Translation with the Aid of Previous Versions and with Constant Consultation of Jewish Authorities” was published in 1917. Dr. Margolis was professor of Biblical Philology at Dropsie College from 1909 until his death.

Accompanied by a printed form letter signed in facsimile “Henrietta Szold,” as Editor, one page, 8” x 10.5”. Slight tears at edges. Letterhead: “The Jewish Publication Society of America / American Jewish Year Book / 5668,” New York, April 4, 1907. Stamped “Second Request.” To Louis E. Levy, Pres., Association of Jewish Immigrants, asking him to fill out an enclosed form revising the 5661 (1900-1901) entry of his organization (original form present, chipped at edges) for inclusion in the 5668 (1907-1908) edition.
