Harry S. Truman Signed Super Rare Stock Certificate

A handsome stock certificate signed by future 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), then in his role as Presiding Judge of the County Court in Jackson County, Missouri, as "Harry S Truman" at lower right. Signed in Jackson County on July 15, 1930. Countersigned by the County Clerk at lower left. Printed on double-weight paper with a charming prairie vignette featuring Conestoga wagons at top and a cobalt blue border. Embossed with the "Jackson County Court" seal at center bottom, and clerically hole-punched along the bottom edge. A docket is found verso. Expected light folds. An isolated minor stain is found in the upper right corner recto, else near fine. 9.75" x 14.75." Accompanied by a photocopy of the original auction invoice from R.M. Smythe & Co. Inc. (New York, New York), showing that this Truman signed certificate was sold as Lot 354 at Sale 176 during the summer of 1998 for a total price of $3,080.

"State of Missouri County of Jackson Road & Bridge Bond" No. 6329 was issued in the amount of $1,000. Its principal investment, along with 4.5% interest, was payable on January 15 and July 15, 1949, some nineteen years after it was issued.

Truman served as Presiding Judge of the County Court in Jackson County, Missouri between 1927-1935. Jackson County, located on the Missouri / Kansas border, including major city and second county city Kansas City. During his tenure, Judge Truman was instrumental in putting bond issues on the ballot for public approval. The securing of millions of dollars of such bonds enabled Truman to implement an ambitious plan which would greatly improve the county's infrastructure while simultaneously providing economic stimulus during the ongoing Great Depression. The bonds financed the construction of highways, hard-surfaced roads, bridges, a hospital, and a courthouse in Kansas City, as well as the renovation of the court house in Independence, Truman's adopted home town.

Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
