Description:

Grant Edition of "Vicksburg Daily Citizen" Wallpaper Newspaper, 1885

A later reprint, the 1885 "Grant Edition" of "The Vicksburg Daily Citizen" newspaper originally issued by publisher J.M. Swords in Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 2, 1863. The approaching 25th anniversary of one of the Civil War's most important Union battles -- the Siege of Vicksburg (May-July 1863) -- but more importantly, the recent death of Union commander and president U.S. Grant (1822-1885) -- inspired publisher C.R. Cosgrove of Westfield, New York to issue this commemorative reproduction of the original newspaper. Printed in four columns with an additional column entitled "The Grand Edition" with a tribute to the dead general found at extreme right. Block-printed floral wallpaper in brown, olive green, red, and cream can be found verso. Expected paper folds, some of which have split and been repaired with adhesive tape. Else very good. 13.25" x 19.5".

Supplies ran low during the waning days of the Siege of Vicksburg, including that of available newsprint. The city newspaper publisher resorted to printing issues of his "The Vicksburg Daily Citizen" on the backsides of wallpaper during the last two weeks of the siege. This 1885 reproduction is based on an issue "As found by the Union Soldiers when Grant captured the city" on July 4th. Reproductions of the celebrated "wallpaper newspapers" began as early as the 1870s, mostly in conjunction with Grand Army of the Republic and other veterans' commemorations.
