Description:

George Washington Carriage Trimming Fabric Remnant W. Provenance

Garment fragment 1.5" x 1.25" from the carriage of George Washington. Multi toned course fabric in browns and tans the fragment remnant is attached to a sheet with a pin, and housed in a box. A delicate inscription is located on the sheet of lightly lined paper, placed just above the fabric "Washington's Car trimming". A contemporary box houses the fabric, box size 5.5" x 4.5".

The Washington carriage fabric is accompanied by three separate pieces of provenance - all with notations, inscriptions or names in the same handwriting as the Washington carriage fragment, and all approximately circa mid-19th century. The inscriptions appear to be in faded graphite. These pieces of provenance are 1) A small 2.5" x 3" bi-fold ornate picture frame with a silver backed photo of a young girl, and faded stamped fabric. Her name written in the same hand as appears on the Washington fabric piece is pinned within.

2) A 3.25" x 3.75" bi-fold ornate picture frame with a silver backed photo of a woman, shown opposite of faded pink silk fabric. Her name written in the same hand as appears on the Washington fabric piece is pinned within.

3) A 3.75" x 5.5" book circa 1851, "A Guide to the Virginia Springs" inclusive of a large faded graphite notation to the inner front pastedown also written in the same hand as found with the Washington fabric. These pieces of accompanying provenance are worn with age and in good only condition, however they offer spectacular provenance for the George Washington Carriage Trimming.

The fabric remnant has a course weave and is fairly stiff which would be expected for the period. Washington's Mansion House Farm had spinners, seamstresses and knitters producing fabric and textiles so this may have even been produced by his house staff on his estate.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
