Description:

George W. Goethals Stock Certificate Issued to & Signed by Him

A stock certificate issued to American engineer George Washington Goethals (1858-1928), and signed by him as "Geo. W. Goethals" in the stock transfer section verso. The blue bordered certificate features two embossed seals recto, one in blue and one in gilt. Stock certificate No. 33 granted 25 $10 shares of Army & Navy Co-Operative Company Capital Stock to George W. Goethals on May 6, 1912 in a transaction authorized by the company president and treasurer. Goethals sold his stock to company trustees on March 17, 1919, as seen in the stock transfer section verso where a cancelled revenue stamp is also found. Expected wear including light overall toning, isolated edge darkening, and a few slight closed tears found along paper folds. Numerous pin marks at the corners. Else near fine. 11.125" x 8.625"

A West Point graduate and career officer of the Army Corps of Engineers, Goethals was appointed Chief Engineer of the Panama Canal project in 1907. The canal opened in 1914, two years ahead of schedule, thanks in large part to Goethals's efficient administration. Goethals later served as Acting Quartermaster General of the U.S. Army between 1917-1919.

The Army & Navy Co-Operative Company headquartered in New York City offered items to service members at discounted prices. The Co-Operative aimed to make uniforms, equipment, and other military essentials more affordable.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
