Description:

George Patton Jr. Signed Envelope Cover & Photos Sent Home to Wife, Four Strips of 15 Photos Total

A clipped Air Mail envelope cover, measuring 4" x 2.25", no place, postmarked May 1, 1944. Patton's signature is present within the address on the cover, signed as "G S Patton Jr." The edges of the envelope have been clipped in places. Light wear to the corners and edges. Bold signature by the legendary U.S. Army general.

Accompanying the envelope are four miniature photo strips, with 15 full images. The strips, measuring between 1.25" x 2.5" in length, contain between two to five full images, with a few partial images. Most of the photographs appear to have been taken aboard a large cruiser, possibly the USS Augusta. There are three images of Patton, two being large portrait-type images. Additionally there images of other unidentified commanders and soldiers, shots of the deck, and an image of a large fleet. These images, which had been sent home by Patton to his wife along with the above envelope, were deaccessioned from the Patton Homestead/Wenham Museum in Hamilton, Massachusetts. Some images appear to have been overexposed with some silvering at the edges, but they are a wonderful glimpse at General Patton's life during the war.

In late January 1944, George Patton was formally given command of the U.S. Third Army and was tasked with preparing the "green" men for combat duty in Europe. In the lead-up to the Normandy Invasion, Patton was told to keep a low profile and disguise his training in order to deceive the Germans about the upcoming attack. Operation Overlord was launched on June 6, 1944 with the landings on the Normandy beaches. Patton was to engage his Third Army on August 1, and in the ensuing attacks, the Third Army was able to take the majority of Brittany.
