Description:

G. Garibaldi Fantastic Pair of Signed Items

Scarce 100 Lire Bond, Series 3, No. 2021, 1 p., Rome, 1867, 6.75" x 4".  Pink, red, and yellow, with ornate engravings, embossed blind stamp at top right, center vignette of a maiden seated with Romulus, Remus, and she-wolf, and signed by Giuseppe Garibaldi at left, "G. Garibaldi", and Eugenio Agneni, "E. Agneni", at bottom right.  Slight toning, minor wrinkling, tiny chips to bottom edge, else Fine.  Accompanied by a fabulous Giuseppe Garibaldi carte-de-visite, signed and inscribed by Garibaldi, 2.25" x 4".

This subscription, to which the citizens joined without security, "to relieve the sad conditions" of the Roman population, was promoted by the Insurrection Center formed in Rome in 1867 to encourage Garibaldi's revolt.  Garibaldi, as leader of his army, resolved upon saving Rome - still under the rule of the Papal State - to complete the unity of Italy.  These bonds were issued in Florence in 1867 by the Center of the Roman Migration founded by Garibaldi himself, who signed the 100 Lire notes.  At verso, the Insurrection Center proclaims the purposes of this issue to the Italians, instigating them to revolt because "Rome belongs to the Romans".

Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882) was a military leader who led a movement that united Italy in the mid-1800s. He stood in opposition to the oppression of the Italian people, and his revolutionary instincts inspired people on both sides of the Atlantic. He lived an adventurous life, which included stints as a fisherman, sailor, and soldier. His activities led him into exile, which meant living for a time in South America and even, at one point, in New York.
