Description:

Franklin D. Roosevelt War-Dated TLS Thanking Fellow Upper Crust New Yorker

1p typed letter signed by sitting 32nd U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) as "Franklin D Roosevelt" at center right. Written at the White House in Washington, D.C. on November 21, 1942. On bifold stationery with embossed "The White House / Washington" letterhead. The inner pages are blank. Expected light paper folds and minor mounting traces verso, else near fine. 6.875" x 8.875."

President Roosevelt took a few moments from his busy schedule--managing the American war effort among other critical tasks--to write a cordial thank you note to "Mrs. Schuyler Warren" of Fifth Avenue, in part: "I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your nice note of congratulations. It was good of you to write me as you did…"

The historical records do not reveal much information about Roosevelt's correspondent Mrs. Schuyler Warren, except that her maiden name was Alice Binsse and she married Schuyler Nelson Warren of New York. Circumstantial evidence suggests, however, that the Warrens and the Roosevelts moved among the same elite New York circles. Both "Schuyler" and "Roosevelt" are surnames of Dutch origin, pointing to perhaps a similar knickerbocker heritage. Period New York social registers reveal that the Warrens summered in Tuxedo Park, New York, which was about 50 miles south of the Roosevelts at Hyde Park, New York. Another example of Mrs. Warren's correspondence with FDR can be found in the collection of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.
