Description:

Frank W. Woolworth Archive, Including Rare Stock Issued to Him

A small archive relating to American entrepreneur Frank Winfield Woolworth (1852-1919), including an unusual stock certificate issued to him. 9 pieces total.

The lot is comprised of:

1. Stock certificate No. 171 granting 500 $100 shares of Capital Stock from The Luce Compress and Cotton Company to F.W. Woolworth on November 28, 1906. The green bordered certificate features a vignette of black sharecroppers picking cotton in front of a factory. Engrossed by company officials recto, with an embossed green seal at lower left. The administrator of the Estate of F.W. Woolworth signed the transfer section panel verso on November 17, 1920, some 19 months after the multimillionaire's death in April 1919. Expected folds, the vertical ones with isolated tape stains. Overall light toning and grubbiness, else very good. 11.375" x 8.375."

2. Two "Specimen" stock certificates from the F.W. Woolworth Company and Woolworth Corporation dating from the late 1980s to mid-90s. Blank though either stamped, cancelled with perforation marks, or hole-punched.

3. Six collectibles, including an event invitation to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the erection of the Woolworth Building on May 2, 1988; and three vintage postcards, two in color, depicting the Woolworth Building.

Frank W. Woolworth opened his first "Five-and-Dime" store in Utica, New York in 1879. The predecessor of today's dollar stores, Woolworth's chain stores became extremely popular, both for their low prices and for the freedom they gave to consumers to shop without the aid (or interference) of sales clerks. In 1911, there were nearly 600 Woolworth stores in the United States, and at Woolworth's death in 1919, his estate was appraised at over $75 million.

The Woolworth Building served as company headquarters after its completion in lower Manhattan in 1913. Designed by American architect Cass Gilbert, the 792-feet-tall skyscraper cost approximately $13.5 million to build. It is still one of the 100 tallest buildings in the United States, as well as a National Historic Landmark.
