FDR, 10 Pamphlets, 6 Signed and Inscribed, Results from the Presidential Cruise of 1938

ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Ten Scientific Botanical and Zoological Pamphlets. Washington: Smithsonian Institution, 1939-42. Ten pamphlets. Octavo, original brown printed paper wrappers. Housed together in a custom cloth clamshell box. Fine condition. Scarce and desirable.

First editions of these ten scientific pamphlets published as a result of collections and investigations made during Franklin D. Roosevelt's Presidential Cruise of 1938 - six are presentation copies inscribed and signed "FDR" on the front wrapper. Five of these were presented by FDR to his friend and long-time colleague in combating polio, Basil "Doc" O'Connor.

During the summer of 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt cruised the Galapagos Islands on a scientific expedition sponsored by the Smithsonian. Aboard the U.S.S. Houston with him were scientists representing a wide field of studies. These monographs were published as government pamphlets and include at least three new species discovered and named for F.D.R. They include:

2. Two New Gobioid Fishes Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938. Isaac Ginsburg. May 31, 1939; pp. 5. Illustrated. Signed "Doc O'Connor from F.D.R." Note the first appearance of the Pycnomma Roosevelti.

3. Echinoderms (Other than Holothurians) Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938. Austin H. Clark. June 2, 1939; pp. 18 plus 5 pp. of photographic plates. Signed "Doc O'Connor from F.D.R." Note the first appearance of the Ophionereis Roosevelti.

4. A New Dicrocoeliid Trematode Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938. Allen McIntosh. June 8, 1939; pp. 2. Illustrated. Signed "Doc O'Connor from F.D.R."

5. The Polychaetous Annelids Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938. Olga Hartman. June 9, 1939; pp. 17. Illustrated. Signed "Doc O'Connor from F.D.R."

6. & 7. Coelenterates Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938. Elisabeth Deichann. January 27, 1941; pp. 17. Illustrated. Two copies.

9. A New Cephalopod Mollusk Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938. Helen C. Stuart. February 4, 1941; pp. 6. Illustrated. Note the first appearance of the Octopus Roosevelti.

10. Amphipod Crustaceans Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938. Clarence R. Shoemaker. March 5, 1942; pp. 52. Illustrated. Signed "for Basil from F.D.R." Ownership stamp in one volume.

The recipient of five of these pamphlets, Basil "Doc" O'Connor (1892-1972) was a lawyer by training; in co-operation with FDR he started two foundations for the rehabilitation of polio patients and the research on polio prevention and treatment. From 1944 to 1949 he was Chairman and President of the American Red Cross and from 1945 to 1950 he was Chairman of the League of Red Cross Societies.

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
