Fabulous Edison, Firestone, Burroughs Signed Journal With 44 Original Photos, Very Rare

Thomas A. Edison (1847-1931), John Burroughs (1837-1921), Harvey S. Firestone (1868-1938). "In Nature's Laboratory: Commemorating our Vacation Trip of 1916, August 28th to September 9th", a journal in words and photographs with an introductory letter by John Burroughs, privately printed [1916/7] and signed by Edison "Thos A. Edison", Burroughs "John Burroughs", and Firestone "H.S. Firestone". Drawings and photos tipped in throughout, ending with an itinerary and map of the friends' travels from Orange, New Jersey through the Catskills and Adirondacks to the edge of Canada, and back through the Green Mountains of Vermont and Massachusetts. Unpaginated, sepia print on brown deckled pages, bound in suede blind-stamped with the title and butterflies, 9" x 12". Binding worn, suede dry and flaking, pages with apparent moisture exposure at the top outside corners. Extraordinary example, clearly well-loved, would benefit from professional cleaning and conservation. Provenance: Ex-Collection of Charles E. Sigety; Eric Chaim Kline Bookseller, Santa Monica, CA. Paperwork from Eric Chaim Kline is included.

One of only a few copies printed for circulation among friends, signed by Thomas Alva Edison, naturalist John Burroughs, and industrial magnate Henry S. Firestone to commemorate a one thousand-mile-long camping trip organized by Edison. Henry Ford was to accompany them but had to withdraw at the last minute because of business commitments. According to Firestone, the trip was Burroughs's idea and was intended "to lure us away from the busy world of material and business developments". Edison himself made all the arrangements for their tour in the summer of 1916, providing for a touring car and a Model-T Ford truck bearing the camping equipment, servants, and drivers.
