Historical Background:

Yale graduate and New Haven merchant Nathan Whiting (1724-1771) served as lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Connecticut Militia during the French and Indian War. His regiment and a Massachusetts regiment were marching from Lake George to reinforce Fort Edward in the autumn of 1758, when their column was ambushed by an army of French and Indian allies. Whiting led a fighting retreat of the survivors back to Sir William Johnson’s camp at Lake George, where the British and their Mohawk allies fought off a French attack in the Battle of Lake George on September 8, 1755. Whiting was promoted to Colonel in the Connecticut Militia in 1756, and his regiment guarded the frontier in New Hampshire on the Connecticut River from Fort at Number 4 (now Charlestown, New Hampshire).

Ezekiel Kellogg (1732-1785) was born in Connecticut. In 1758 or 1759, he married Ann Owen (b. 1735), and they had five children.

Jonathan Trumble / Trumbull (1710-1785) was born in Connecticut and graduated from Harvard College in 1727. He studied theology and received an A.M. in 1730, but became a merchant with his father in 1731. He served as a delegate to the General Assembly from 1733 to 1740, and as colonel of a Connecticut regiment during the French and Indian War. Trumbull served as deputy-governor of the Colony of Connecticut from 1766 to 1769, and as Governor of the Connecticut Colony from 1769 to 1776 and Governor of the State of Connecticut from 1776 to 1784. He was the only colonial governor to join the Revolutionary cause. George Washington declared Trumbull to be “the first of the patriots.”
