Description:

Ernest Hemingway Cuban Villa Vintage Film Slides & Color Photo Prints

An assortment of nine vintage 1.5" x 1.5" film slides depicting Finca Vigia, or "Lookout Farm," the rural retreat of American writer Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) located in San Francisco de Paula, Cuba. Accompanied by nine modern color photographic prints of these slides, depicting the buildings, statuary, and vegetation on the property.

The lot is comprised of:

1. Nine color film slides, all housed in square stock holders/mounts, depicting views from Finca Vigia, including five showing a monumental bronze sculpture of Ernest Hemingway's head on a white block pedestal. Both the main house of Finca Vigia and the guest house/garage are visible in the background of these slides. The remaining slides depict tropical vegetation and exotic flowers found on the grounds, as well as a slide showing a possible model of a torpedo (a museum exhibit, somehow related to Hemingway's wartime service as an anti-German submarine patrolman aboard the "Pilar"?)

One of the slide mounts is pen-inscribed with serial numbers verso. The slides are currently stored in a small medicine box bearing the sender's address of Dr. Jose Pedroso Crucet, who directed the Municipal Clinic for Leprosy and Syphilis at Guantanamo, Cuba during the 1950s. The box once containing "Productos Winthrop" is heavily pencil-inscribed and was postmarked from Havana on June 25, 1952. Very good to near fine.

2. Nine color photographic prints of the slides described above, all measuring 4" x 6."

Hemingway first rented and then purchased--in December 1940--Finca Vigia, a Spanish style villa located on a hill 12 miles east of Havana. The stately columned and stuccoed villa designed by a Spanish architect in 1886 was set within a 12-acre estate granting fabulous views of the capital city. Finca Vigia was also equipped with a swimming pool, tennis court, and baseball field.

Hemingway left Finca Vigia for the last time in July 1960. After his 1961 suicide, the property was contested; the Cuban government claimed that Hemingway's widow Mary Welsh Hemingway had donated the estate in its entirety to them, while she alleged that it was confiscated by the authorities. Finca Vigia is now a museum.
