Description:

English Exchequer Bills, Great Lot of 3, Dated 1697 and 1701. Rare!

A group of three English Exchequer Bills, dating from the period of 1697-1701. The bills enabled the English state to get over the credit crisis it faced between 1696 and 1698 and were a key component of England's financial revolution. Includes:

1. Measuring 7.5" x 2.375", England, dated January 10, 1697. The bill, No. 176350, entitles the bearer to £5 "for Warr", signed by Sir Robert Howard. Issued £1,200,000 under the Act of Parliament for funding the present war.

2. Measuring 8.25" x 2.5", England, dated December 29, 1697. The bill, No. 157035, entitles the bearer to £5 "for Warr", signed by Sir Robert Howard. Issued £1,200,000 under the Act of Parliament for funding the present war.

3. Measuring 7.25" x 3", England, dated June 23, 1701. The bill, No. 6432, entitles the bearer to £50 "with interest at two pence a day", signed "Halifax." Established by several Acts of Parliament.

All have docketing on verso and have a blind embossed stamp at the lower right. Two of the bills have a large contemporary "X" on the front. Varying degrees of toning and soiling. Flattened folds. Edges are unevenly cut, with some minor chipping. Else very good.

These bills were introduced one year prior, in 1696, and helped pay interest on loans made to the government. All three were issued under the rule of William III. Sir Robert Howard (1626-1698) was a playwright and politician, son of Thomas, 1st Earl of Berkshire. He served as a Member of Parliament, Secretary to the Treasury in 1671, auditor of the Exchequer in 1673 and Privy Councillor in 1689. Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (1661-1715) served as Lord of the Treasury and helped found the Bank of England.
