Description:

Eleanor Roosevelt, Keynote Speaker at Postwar Women's Joint Congressional Committee Dinner

An invitation granting attendance to a dinner held in the Grand Ballroom of the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. on March 14, 1946, "In honor of / Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt / United States Delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations…" Printed on a heavy stock card and accompanied by its original transmittal envelope bearing a 3-cent purple Thomas Jefferson stamp. The invitation is unevenly toned, especially along the edges. Minor mounting traces are present on the envelope cover. Else good to very good. The invitation measures 5.875" x 4.875."

Guest of honor Eleanor Roosevelt (1882-1962), former First Lady of the United States, spoke at the dinner hosted by the Women's Joint Congressional Committee of Washington, D.C. Eleanor had been recently appointed as a United States delegate to the United Nations General Assembly, and had attended the first session of the U.N. General Assembly in London two months earlier. Eleanor's observations of postwar Europe informed her keynote speech. Her remarks contrasted the situation in the United States with that found elsewhere, where devastation, economic depression, and widespread famine paralyzed Europe and Asia. Eleanor argued that it was only through organizations like the United Nations that future war, suffering, and hunger would be prevented.

Eleanor would serve as a U.S. delegate to the U.N. until 1952. In late April 1946, Eleanor would be appointed 1st Chair of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. A successor to the World War I-era League of Nations, the United Nations had been established with 51 founding members in April 1945, and its charter took effect in October 1945.
