Description:

Edith Wilson TLS Re: Woodrow Wilson Stamp

A 1p typed letter boldly signed by former First Lady Edith Bolling Galt Wilson (1872-1961), as "Edith Bolling Wilson" above her additional signature in type as "(Mrs. Woodrow Wilson)." December 26, 1925. [Washington, D.C.] On watermarked stationery with the address of the Wilsons' home at 2340 S Street, N.W. in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, D.C. embossed at the letterhead. Hand-stamped and docketed by the Postmaster General's Office at upper right. Expected wear including a flattened horizontal transmittal fold, with a tiny closed tear located on the right margin, and a few extra corner wrinkles. Else near fine. 6.75" x 7.875."

Edith Wilson wrote this thank-you note to Harry Stewart New (1858-1927), sitting U.S. Postmaster General from March 1923 to March 1929. She wrote in part: "Allow me to acknowledge your courtesy and thoughtfulness in sending me the four stamps from the first sheet bearing Mr. Wilson's portrait. I need not say that they will be very treasured souvenirs…"

The stamp commemorating Woodrow Wilson had been issued just eight days before, on December 18, 1925, just ten days before what would have been Woodrow Wilson's 68th birthday (December 28th). The attractive black 17-cent stamp was U.S. stamp #623 and featured Wilson's bust portrait. The stamp was issued first in New York City; Princeton, New Jersey, where Wilson served as President of Princeton University from 1902-1910; and in Staunton, Virginia, Wilson's birthplace. Eventually the 1925-1926 stamp run exceeded over 120 million.
