Description:

Dwight D. Eisenhower, Columbia University President, Signed Program from Westchester County Alumni Dinner

An event program and menu from a "Dinner in Honor of Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of Columbia University" signed by Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) as "Dwight D Eisenhower" at the center of the front cover. The event, hosted by Columbia University Alumni of Westchester County, took place in Rye, New York on March 28, 1950 at the Apawamis Club, an exclusive country club founded in 1890. Expected wear including overall light toning, stray pencil marks, and isolated paper clip impressions and mounting traces on the back. Else very good. 7.125" x 10." The 2pp program/menu comes with a 2pp scholarship promotion tucked inside entitled "How Did We Manage To do It? Eight Careers Built Soundly on the Human Bedrock of Columbia College Scholarships." In immaculate condition.

The front cover opens to reveal the event program at left, with the keystone address presented by "General Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of Columbia University"; and a 4-course menu at right, displaying many of the strangely popular and austere foods of postwar America (grape fruit, celery, and olives as hors-d'oeuvres, anyone?) The scholarship fundraiser insert features the real-life success stories of eight Columbia graduates--all men--who ascribed much of many of their achievements to the generosity of their alma mater.

Dwight Eisenhower, a career soldier and five-star general, traded in his military accolades to become the 13th President of Columbia University in 1948. During his five-year-long tenure as university president, Eisenhower was frequently absent from campus. He had become increasingly involved in national politics and international affairs, most notably in 1950 when he served as the supreme commander of NATO. As university president, however, Eisenhower was committed to fostering a new type of American education, exemplified by that offered at Columbia, that prepared its citizens for life in a postwar world. Eisenhower resigned from Columbia University to become the 34th President of the United States in January 1953.
