Description:

Disraeli 7 Vol. Set Illustrated and Signed by Darwin, Dickens, George III, and Hundreds More Signed Items Including Original Engravings and Vintage Photos

The Darwin letter in and of itself is very interesting in that it is written to scientific collaborator on the "Voyage of the Beagle" and possibly mentions Whitwell Elvin who was somehow involved with Darwin in "Origin of the Species". * See note. The Set of Seven Finely Bound Extra Illustrated Volumes are each 11.25" x 9.5",  titled "The Life of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield". The set has hundreds of Original Signed Autographed Letters, Signatures, Signed Manuscripts, Documents and Engravings all housed in a superb fine leather binding. Published by John Murray, London, 1912. The leather bindings have gilt ruled borders, raised band spines with additional gilt decor. All in near fine condition with the 1st and 7th books in the set having detached boards (easily restorable). Each book is housed in a separate crafted slip box, 3 cases in very good condition, 4 need repair with one in pieces, although they appear restorable as the boards appear to be separated along the edges.

* Per Rosemary Clarkson, A member of the Darwin Correspondence Project Team www.darwinproject.ac.ukThe letter from Charles Darwin was written to William Lonsdale, the assistant secretary and librarian of the Geological Society of London, and refers to the presidential address delivered to the society in February 1839 by William Whewell. It appears to have a connection with this letter which CD wrote on 16 February [1839] to Whewell himself: https://www.darwinproject.ac.uk/letter/DCP-LETT-496.xml

If this set were to be created today, the binding alone (without the content), would cost well over the pricing auction estimates for this lot.
