George Walton (1749-1804) signed the Declaration of Independence as a representative from Georgia. He went on to serve as the Governor of Georgia (two separate times) and as a U.S. Senator. He was also a founder and trustee member of both the Academy of Richmond County and of Franklin College (now the University of Georgia). After his second stint as Governor, Walton became a judge of the superior court, a position he held from 1790 until his death. Although from Georgia and Virginia, George Walton is one of the few signers of the Declaration of Independence who historians believe did not own any slaves.
