Description:

Death In The Afternoon, SIGNED by Ernest Hemingway & Vintage Bullfighting Ticket

Later 1952 printing. Signed and Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway on the front fly leaf, "To John F. Correll / best luck always / Ernest Hemingway". The owner, John Correll's name also appears above the inscription. Laid into the book is a Bullfighting Ticket from Plaza de Toros El Toreo / Temporada de novilladas 1939 / No. 218 / Sombra General. This is likely the arena in Madrid which had undergone restoration and had reopened the same year as the date on the ticket. The book has several corner bumps, and was color toned to the spine from what appears to be a removed sticker. The first and last few pages are lightly foxed. Small paper remnant to the half title page. Lacking the original dust jacket. Very good condition with clean interior pages.

The ticket to the bullfight is lightly toned with the right side edge ripped off (perhaps upon entry to the stadium)

Published in 1932, Death in the Afternoon is Hemingway's masterwork on the magnificence of the art of bull-fighting. John Dos Passos praised the book as "an absolute model for how that sort of thing ought to be done," and a contemporary review in The New York Herald Tribune described it as "full of the vigor and forthrightness of the author's personality, his humor, his strong opinions--and language. In short, it is the essence of Hemingway"
