Description:

Charles Lindbergh ALS "I need a hundred lives...to carry on all the things I'd like to do"

3pp, measuring 8.5" x 11", Switzerland, dated December 15, 1969. Boldly signed "Charles", addressed to his friend John Oldrin, regarding a speaking engagement in Connecticut. The lengthy letter reads, in part:

"…I am faced with the choice of cutting down on my hours available or not answering most of the mail that arises from them. I need a hundred lives, at least, to carry on all the things I'd like to do. Unfortunately I have only one, and it is working under a tempo I am determined not to continue. Personally, I am not a man for anniversaries, ceremonies, and celebrations. There are always ways in which I would rather spend my time. However, I respectfully the viewpoints of people who do care for these things, and I wish you every success in the anniversary you are planning for. I think your idea of using it to emphasize the essential need of conservation and preservation is excellent. I wish I could suggest a speaker. Unfortunately this is a field with which I have had little contact. The World Wildlife Fund is not now organized to furnish speakers, although I am inclined to think that it should be. Possibly the Nature Conservancy could advise you in this respect, or the Conservation Foundation. You probably have the Nature Conservancy's address. It is: 1522 K. Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005. The Conservation Foundation's address is 1520 Connecticut Avenue, Washington, D.C. 20036. Thomas M. Richards is president of the Nature Conservancy. Russell Train was president of the Conservation Foundation before he was appointed Under Secretary of the Interior. I am not sure who has taken his place. While I cannot say that I wish I could speak, I do wish I could be of more help to you with suggestions, for I think you have hit upon a highly constructive idea…" The letter is accompanied by the original, hand-addressed envelope, postmarked December 15, sent from the Basel Badischer Bahnhof railway in the Swiss city of Basel. The letter has flattened folds, with light edge toning. Expected wear to the envelope, with light creasing and soiling.

Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974), a former U.S. Air Mail pilot, made history by making his nonstop flight from New York to Paris, the first solo transatlantic flight. Later in life, the famed aviator used his fame to help campaign for numerous conservation projects around the world. He sought to preserve areas of Hawaii and the Philippines and engaged in numerous wildlife preservation expeditions, including polar bears, humpback whales, the Philippine eagle, and several wild animals of West Africa.

Russell E. Train (1920-2012) was founder and chairman of the World Wildlife Fund. One of the most influential and well-known leaders in American conservation, Train served as an administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Presidents Nixon and Ford, before becoming president and chairman of World Wildlife Fund from 1978 to 1990. He also served as Under Secretary of the Department of the Interior from 1969 to 1970.
