Description:

Cast Iron Neck Shackles From Middle Passage, 30" in Length

18th - early 19th century neck and wrist shackles of the type used to restrain enslaved people while moving them. Grim reminders of world history, the slaves were typically shackled/chained together via a long chain connecting them which would run through one of the circles. This piece appears to be made of hand hammered iron with a neck clamp, two wrist clamps to constrain the arms, and the center ring probably was used to run a long chain through to connect multiple people together during transit.  The action of connecting a group of slaves would prevent both a revolt, as well as making it impossible for them to run away.  They would then be boarded onto ships  during the Middle Passage crossing the Atlantic from Africa to the Americas. This set is 30" in length, with the neck opening of 5.5" x 5.5".

There is expected minor surface pitting and oxidation from age, having a natural rich patina.

The "Middle Passage" was the stage of the triangular trade in which millions of people from Africa were shipped to the New World as part of the Atlantic Slave trade. Ships departed Europe for African markets with manufactured goods, which were traded for purchased or kidnapped Africans, who were transported across the Atlantic as Slaves; the Slaves were then sold or traded for raw materials, which would be transported back to Europe to complete the voyage. Voyages on the Middle Passage were a large financial undertaking, and they were generally organized by companies or groups of investors rather than individuals.
