Description:

Carl Schurz, German-born Civil War Major General, ALS Related to Turn-of-the-Century Scientists

A 1p autograph letter signed in German by Carl Schurz (1829-1906), the former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, as "C. Schurz" near the bottom. Written in New York City on November 21, 1887. Lightly toned. An imperfect pencil erasures is found in the upper left hand corner and is mentioned just for accuracy. Else near fine. 2.75" x 5." Accompanied by a German transcription and English translation. Provenance: From the Collection of Norman Boas of Seaport Autographs, and purchased at Christie's December 5, 2017 sale as part of Lot 74. Norman Boas was the grandson of Dr. Franz Boas, to be elaborated below.

Carl Schurz conveyed a friend's address to Dr. Frank Boas (1858-1942), a fellow German émigré. Boas, a geographer and field researcher, would become one of the most influential anthropologists in the United States after emigrating in 1887. It is unclear how Schurz and Boas knew each other; was Dr. Boas reaching out to fellow German émigrés for social or professional networking purposes?

Schurz wrote in part, "…enclosed [is] the letter to Clarence King. However, I don't know where he currently resides and whether he's in town…"

Schurz and his friend Clarence King (1842-1901) probably met during Schurz's tenure as U.S. Secretary of the Interior during the Hayes administration. King was a preeminent geologist celebrated for his exploration of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and for his term as first director of the United States Geological Survey between 1879-1881. King would have probably have had much to discuss with Dr. Boas, the anthropologist.

Carl Schurz had fled Germany following the Revolution of 1848 and ended up in Wisconsin by 1852. During the Civil War, he attained the rank of Major General in the Union Army. Schurz was a journalist and politician in his later life.
