Carl Jung Remarkable TLS Discussing His Association Method with German Colleague

A 1p typed letter in German signed by Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung (1875-1961) as "C.G. Jung" at lower right. Written in Küsnacht-Zurich, Switzerland on September 30, 1948. On stationery with "Prof. Dr. C.G. Jung" letterhead. Expected light paper folds along the quarters, with some folds finely creased. A gentle fold found at the upper left corner recto, and a miniscule remnant of hinging found at the upper edge verso are mentioned just for accuracy. Else near fine. 8.25" x 10.375." Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope bearing a Swiss stamp postmarked in Bollingen. The envelope is pencil docketed and bears philatelic markings. Letter-opened at right.

Dr. Carl Jung wrote this letter to his German protégé Wolfgang Müller Kranefeldt (1892-1950). Dr. Jung had personally analyzed Kranefeldt, and considered him his star pupil in Germany. In the letter, Dr. Jung discusses the merits of using the "Assoziations-Experiment," or Association Method, as a fundamental psychoanalytic diagnostic tool. Dr. Jung adds that the Association Method was taught at the Carl G. Jung Institute, the teaching and research institution named after him and founded in Küsnacht-Zurich in 1948.

Translated in part:

"In fact, I consider the association experiment [Assoziations-Experiment] as a basis for training. We have also included this in the curriculum at our Institute. It is a valuable exercise for beginners in recognizing complexes. In practice, I used it a lot in the past, when I still felt unsure and did not understand too much about dreams. Through the experiment one becomes acquainted with currently effective complexes, which forms a good basis for speech. That is why I just did an lege artis [a Latin term literally meaning the "law of art," or, "properly," especially within a medical context] association experiment with many patients, including a reproduction experiment, which of course I did not announce beforehand, but simply connected to the association experiment…"

When employing the Jungian Association Method, psychoanalysts present patients with a series of words. The associations which the patients draw from these words can enable the psychoanalyst to draw conclusions about the patient's world view, personality, and attitude towards sex. The Association Method reveals information about constellations, that is, how multiple ideas relate to a central idea; and complexes, more intense constellations which can become over-powering or deviant especially if repressed.

A few of Dr. Jung's first German language articles exploring the Association Method were published in 1906-1907. His English language "Association Method" appeared in the "American Journal of Psychology" in 1910. Before their personal and professional break, Dr. Jung's Austrian colleague Sigmund Freud was intrigued by Jung's research concerning the Association Method.
