Description:

Bystanders Shelter on the Ground Minutes After John F Kennedy Is Shot

A black and white photograph, measuring 9" x 7", Dallas, dated November 22, 1963. A UPI Telephoto, showing police officers speeding off on their motorcycles, just seconds after President Kennedy was shot. Parade attendees huddle on the ground in confusion, while a news reporter attempts to capture events on his video camera. On verso is attached a caption entitled "Looking For Cover", that reads in full: "A newsreel cameraman stands at the left as spectators hug the ground moments after sniper's bullet ended President John F. Kennedy's life, Nov. 22. Texas Governor John Connally was also wounded by the sniper's barrage of gunfire. Secret Service men rushed the President to Parkland Hospital where he died." Also stamped on verso, giving credit to United Press International. The photograph is numbered DAP112207 - New York Bureau. With slightly curled edges. Soiling and toning on verso. Very fine.

Kennedy's 1961 Lincoln Continental entered Dealey Plaza at approximately 12:30pm on November 22, 1963. After passing the Texas School Book Depository and continuing down Elm Street, Kennedy was struck by two bullets, one a fatal headshot. Witnesses at the time recall hearing three shots, but in the confusion, many were not sure from where the shots were coming. Police and spectators rushed to the grassy knoll where some believed the shots were fired. Approximately 104 witnesses in Dealey Plaza were detained and interviewed, with 51.9% believing shots came from the book depository, 31.7% believing they came from the grassy knoll or triple underpass, and the rest believing the shots came from multiple locations or from another location entirely.
