Description:

British Three per Cent Annuities Certificate for £600, Nov. 11, 1789

1p partially printed, measuring 8.125" x 6.5", Great Britain, dated November 11, 1789. An inscribed stock receipt for £600. Formed by consolidation of earlier issues in 1785 under an Act for 'converting the several Annuities, therein mentioned into several Joint Stocks of Annuities, transferable at the BANK OF ENGLAND, to be charged on the Sinking Fund'. Received from Mrs. Sarah Hadley and Mr. William Plumer Windus a sum of Four hundred Seventy two pounds 10/. Signed by Thomas Tueaer and a Witness. With unidentified numbers written on verso. Light creasing and toning throughout. Minor soiling and spotting. Bumped corners. Very fine.

This is one of the famous 3 or 4 percent consuls that were established in the 1750s and are still used today (although some or all have been refunded into a lower rate security by the Chancellor of the Exchequer Goschen in the late 19th Century). Called perpetuities, these certificates have no expiration date and promise only a stream of income, making it easy to determine the yield by dividing the annual income stream by the current market price. In the 1970s, when the UK was struggling financially, many of these certificates dropped down extremely low prices that would yield handsome double-digit returns.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
