Description:

Bold George Washington Soc. of Cincinnati DS. Dated July 4th!

Boldly signed "Go: Washington" (usually signatures on this document are quite light) as President of the Society of the Cincinnati and countersigned by Henry Knox as Secretary. 1p partly-printed, measuring 19.5" x 13", Mount Vernon, Virginia, dated July 4th, 1786. Washington and the future Secretary of War Knox signed the document certifying the membership of Major William Munson for his service as “Major in the Army of the United States of America.” Framed with an engraving of Washington to an overall size of 35.5" x 20.75." A small hole that is barely noticeable, some fading which does not detract from the Bold and clear signature.

In 1775 William Munson registered for military service. Beginning April 15, 1776, he would march with Elmore's Continental Regiment as a 1st lieutenant. He later joined the 2nd Canadian Regiment (Hazen's) and was promoted to captain on January 9, 1778 (and later breveted captain).

The Society of the Cincinnati, open to former officers of the Continental Army and its foreign allies, was founded with Washington's approval by Knox, Jedidiah Huntington, and Baron von Steuben. The order was named after "that illustrious Roman, Lucius Quintius Cincinnatus," who had left his prosperous farm on two occasions to take up arms in defense of his homeland. Washington agreed to become president of the Society and  Alexander Hamilton would fill the post after Washington's death.
