Description:

Benjamin Disraeli ALS "...my speech was universally admired", Ca. 1836

4pp, measuring 7.25" x 9", Carlton Club, London, undated [circa December 1836]. Signed by Disraeli as "D" and addressed to his sister, Sarah. Disraeli describes a recent speech he gave at a Conservative banquet held at Aylesbury. He had been chosen to give the toast in honor of the House of Lords, and his speech was met with such praise that the Times published portions of the speech for the public. The letter reads in part:

"…About 6 o'clk, the great Chin (Sir A.G.) drew me aside in a mysterious manner & informed me there was a very exclusive house dinner on the morrow, & that one place was still vacant which he begged me to accept as my speech was universally admired, 'there was only one opinion about it & he was happy to say that both at Whites & Boodles, it was spoken of in the same manner.' About 7 o'clk: Chandos arrived very excited, to receive the congratulations of the party. The room was very full, & I must say this for Chandos that he did me justice for he stood against the fire and sd…'I have been in the House of Commons 20 years & never heard a speech like it & I'll be damned if I think there ever was a speech like it…' Yesterday Ld Forester & Cecil, Stratford, Abinger, Sir A.G. Pemberton & Sterling & myself framed a most agreeable house dinner. Sterling talked much of my speech…I have seen Colburn who seems in more than high spirits abt H.T. He says he shall not be content unless he works it up like Pelham, notwithstanding the change of Times. There were many reviews yesterday; you have of course seen the Atheneum; they were all in that vein, but on the whole highly calculated to make people read, if that were wanted, but it is not. The Spectator said of the Bucks meeting, that the speaking on the whole was stupid as usual, except Mr. Disraeli who after a little of his usual rhodomontade about the Peers being the founder of liberty, grew abusive & amusing; & then quoted the Shakespearian passages…" The letter has flattened mail folds and light toning. Boldly signed.

At this time in his career, Disraeli had settled firmly into the Tory camp and had been invited to the exclusively Tory Carlton Club in London. He also made several attacks against Irish MP Daniel O'Connell, much to the delight of his party, and his exchanges with O'Connell (also published in The Times) pushed the young MP into the public spotlight for the first time. Richard Plantagenet Campbell Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1823-1889), was a close personal friend of Disraeli who later served as the Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1867-1868 and Governor of Madras from 1875-1880.
