A 2pp autograph letter signed in the third person by British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) as "Mr Disraeli" on the first line. Written in London, England on January 30, 1875. On bifold mourning stationery with "2, Whitehall Gardens, / S.W." letterhead. Docketed in another hand at the top of the first page. Expected wear including gentle paper folds. Minor scattered foxing, with some loss and abrasions found along the edge of the fourth blank page probably from previous mounting. Else near fine. 4.5" x 7."

In full, with original usage and punctuation:

"Mr Disraeli with his humble duty to yr Majesty

Mr Justice Keating Resigns the Bench on Monday. It has been usual, in such cases, to swear the retiring Judges of yr Majestys Privy Council so that th may become members of the Judicial Committee.

If yr Majesty approves of this suggestion, made to me by the Ld Chancellor, might Sir Henry Keating attend the Council on the 4th to be sworn?"

The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, established by Queen Victoria's predecessor King William IV in 1833, served as the court of last resort for the British Empire. Its influence extended to British territorial and colonial matters but stopped short of domestic issues.

Sir Henry Keating (1804-1888) had sat as a Judge of Common Pleas since 1859. He was duly appointed a member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in 1875.

Disraeli would serve two terms as British Prime Minister, in 1868 and between 1874-1880. Hugh Cairns, 1st Earl Cairns (1819-1885) acted as Lord Chancellor during both of Disraeli's ministries.
