Description:

Benj. Huntington Signed Document Re: Fate of the Brig Nancy's Cargo

2pp, 8.25" x 13", Hartford, Connecticut, dated May 8, 1777 and received and signed by Huntington August 19, 1777. A legal document from the American Revolution, detailing the fate of the confiscated cargo from the Brig Nancy. The ship had belonged to wealthy Boston Loyalist, Joshua Winslow, and this document states the forfeiture of the Winslow family's interest in the vessel and its captured cargo. Reading in part:

"…That the Brig Nancy and her Cargo brought into Norwich in the year 1775 belonged to said Estate and is by order of the General Assembly taken for Publick use &c and that there is no other Estate of said [illegible] in this state to satisfy said Execution Paying that said sum…" [referencing the debt of £137.6.1 3/4 owed by the Estate]. On verso is a statement signed by Huntington that reads "Recd August 19th 1777 of Isreal Lawrence One hundred thirty seven pounds, six shillings & one penny 3/4 contents. Benj Huntington". With further docketing on verso. Flattened folds. Light edge toning and foxing. Uneven edges, with a few small separations starting at edge folds.

The Brig Nancy was captured in 1775 by famed Patriot Privateer Captain Robert Niles, commanding the schooner The Spy. The capture of the ship, owned by Loyalist Joshua Winslow, was a huge morale boost to the Patriot citizens and soldiers in Connecticut and to the Continental Army as a whole. The cargo, 19,000 gallons of molasses, became known as "The Tory Molasses", and was distributed to military stores and hospitals.
