Beautiful Maps in Relaciones Geográficas de Indias, Peru, Volume I

Volume I of a set of four. Entitled "Relaciones Geográficas de Indias: Peru". Madrid: Tipografía de Manuel G. Hernandez, 1881. A small quarto. CLIV, 216pp with Appendices. Paper wraps. One color map and one black and white map. The text of the volume is in Spanish, created for the International Congress of Americanists which met in Madrid in 1881. The volume covers have heavy foxing, toning, and areas of soiling. Clean internal pages. Page edges and spine are worn and chipped, with areas of paper loss and flaking. Binding has come undone in places, with sections of the volumes being loose. The color map has retained its vibrancy.

Relaciones Geográficas were a series of elaborate questionnaires distributed to the lands owned by King Philip II of Spain in the Viceroyalty of New Spain in North America. They were produced, upon his command, from 1579-1585, and were a direct response to the reforms imposed by the Ordnances of 1573. The questionnaires had upward of fifty questions that requested information on various aspects of the Spanish colonial life in each region or major town, in order to govern it more effectively. Specific questions included taxes paid, the natural environment and resources, population history, settlement patterns, the language, markets and trade, native history and customs, maps, and the progress of the "missionization" program. Thus, these questionnaires had more of an administrative and functional purpose as opposed to intellectual gain, and have provided incredibly detailed information as to the lives of 16th-century ethnic groups in Mesoamerica.

The included maps were created by indigenous people, sailors, local officials, and other individuals in New Spain. These surveys were reported back to Spain's King Phillip II and allowed the Spanish monarchy to have better control over the people and the politics in New Spain.
