Description:

Beautiful Engraving of the "Lincoln Family", Depicting a Calm & Domestic Scene

An oval engraving, measuring 6.5" x 8.5" (sight), Philadelphia, undated [circa 1865]. Entitled "Lincoln Family", the engraving was painted by artist F. Schell, engraved by A.B. Walter, and published by John Dainty. Abraham Lincoln is depicted sitting in a chair, wearing spectacles and reading a book. His wife, Mary Todd Lincoln is seated beside him, and his youngest son, Tad, stands at his side. Lincoln’s oldest son, Robert, stands just behind the group, wearing his Captain’s uniform. A portrait of Willie Lincoln can also be seen in the upper right corner. Light toning to the engraving, with some possible faint dampstaining along the upper left margin. Spot of foxing on the mat, else very good. Minor wear to the beautiful wooden frame.

As far as historians are aware, the Lincoln family never sat for an official, complete family portrait. Nevertheless, artists such as Schell created their own imagined family scenes, using individual portraits of family members to capture each subject’s likeness. Willie Lincoln died at the age of eleven in 1862, an event that devastated the Lincoln family. Sadly, Tad would also die young, succumbing to pneumonia at age 18 in 1871. Robert Lincoln was the only child to live a long and full life; he studied law at Harvard, was commissioned as a captain in Grant’s army, served as Secretary of War for President Garfield, and later owned his own law firm. Mary Todd Lincoln never fully recovered from the death of her husband and two sons and fell into a deep depression. At times she exhibited alarming and erratic behavior, and for a period in 1875 she was committed to a private asylum. She passed away at the age of 63 in 1882.
