Description:

Autograph Manuscript List of Darwin’s Works with Corrections & Additions in Darwin's Hand

6pp (4pp of a bifolium and 2pp on a single sheet) , measuring 5.25" x 8.25", no place, undated [circa 1870]. A handwritten list of Charles Darwin’s publications through 1869, likely written in his wife, Emma Darwin's hand, or one of his daughters'. With numerous autograph emendations and additions in Darwin's hand. For example, on page 1, he amended the second entry of The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle that read that it was "edited & superintended by C. Darwin 1840", adding the word "only" before the statement. This example also contains Emma Darwin's signature through the use of her husband's name. on page 2, he adds to the third entry on the page, writing "The type is thick & thus a large work on matter." On page 5, he has twice written in the word "Plates" to two separate entries. The manuscript goes on to list Darwin's publications of "General Works", "Botanical Works" and "Zoological Works", and it can be assumed that it spent a significant amount of time in his hands, due to time it would take to read through it and make such edits. There may be additional examples within the piece, but there are the one we can positively identify.

Together with the contemporary envelope in which the list was sent, with an autograph note signed by Armand de Quatrefages as "A De Q." Written in French, it reads (translated): ""Darwin 1809-1182. List of works. Autograph list sent to me by Darwin on the occasion of his application to become member of the Ac[adémie] des Sc[iences], which I supported." The manuscript list has flattened folds and light toning throughout. A small spot of ink soiling on page 2. Separation at the lower spine of the bifolium, else very fine. The envelope has some light wear and creasing, else very good. Previously sold by Paris' Artcurial in their November 2018 sale for just under $20,000.

Armand de Quatrefages (1810-1892) was a French biologist who began a correspondence with Darwin sometime around 1859. The two had a friendly relationship despite disagreeing on numerous theories of natural history. In 1870, Quatrefages, along with Henri Milne-Edwards, nominated Darwin to be elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences, within the section of Anatomy and Zoology. Darwin's nomination was rejected, and he would not be admitted until eight years later, after five other unsuccessful attempts. This time, he was admitted to the section of Botany, in which his theories were less controversial than in zoology.
