Description:

Arthur Szyk Illuminated Manuscript, "Merry Christmas"

Two holiday-themed illuminated manuscripts by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk (1894-1952), probably preparatory studies for future artwork. The original artwork at left is inscribed "Merry Christmas," while the original artwork at right reads "Christmas Wishes." According to the Consignor this was used for the war time Red Cross Christmas Card. Outlined in pencil and inscribed in Gothic lettering in red, gold, blue, and black ink, featuring wonderful medieval-inspired floral, foliate, and geometric decoration that elevates the text to a graphic level. Provenance: Consigned directly from Arthur Szyk's family.

The two illuminated manuscripts are matted and framed behind glass. Expected surface wear to the paper and frame. There is isolated foxing to the right manuscript, and the pencil ruling of the bottom register of the "Merry Christmas" message is still visible. Else near fine. Not examined out of the frame. Hand-stamped on the frame backing verso, "Aug 20 1999." The overall framed size is 11.75" x 9.75" x 1.25."

Arthur Szyk was a talented illustrator who settled permanently in the United States after 1940. He used his technical knowledge of medieval and Renaissance book illumination to create intricate drawings and illustrations commenting on history, spiritual life, and modern politics.
